General Motors announced in a press release this morning that Mark Reuss, former executive vice president for global product development will become GM’s president, effective immediately. In his new role, Reuss will not only run the Cadillac division, but also the Global Product Group and the quality team. Mr. Reuss is no stranger to the top spot at GM as his father, Lloyd Reuss, was president of GM in the early 90’s.

This latest announcement is part of what the company is referring to as “restructuring”, following last month’s shocking announcement that GM would be closing 5 manufacturing plants in North America and cease production of several vehicles across their product line as part of what the company referred to as an effort to continue “Transforming the global enterprise to advance the company’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion.”

“Mark’s global operational experience, deep product knowledge and strong leadership will serve us well as we continue to strengthen our current business, take advantage of growth opportunities and further define the future of personal mobility,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “Mark has played a critical role in leading the development of the company’s award-winning vehicles while transitioning his team to prepare for growing electrification and autonomous technologies.”

The company has made clear their intent to move aggressively towards a more autonomous, zero-emissions lineup. Mr. Reuss has been instrumental in product development throughout his career at GM and has vowed to double resources in these areas over the next 2 years.
